I am old enough to remember watching the last day of play of the 4th day in a five-day scheduled test between ENG and AUS at the Oval In Surrey played between Aug 20 and 25 inclusive, in 1938 when I was a twelve-year-old boy who paid two shillings to sit on the grass. England won by an innings and 579 runs. BTW there was a rest day on Sundays back then.

Sorry didnt send you card for Christmas. When i went to the post office said was to late for mail to arrive by Christmas. I am trying to find out when the mast was erected at Watts. yesterday saw a photo off a barnardos collecting with watts in background but no mast. Have looked on wikipedia no result. Thought you might have knowledge.

With regard to the mast. I would say it was as old as the safety net underneath. My step father visiting with my mother in 1940 asked senior boys how long had the net been there had it been changed.
I t seemed the !.5 inch sizal net had been there at least ten years without change up to 1942 when I left. Totally unsafe but the mast was still climbed . the mast was from an aged Battle wagon circa 19 12 or thereabouts , probably as old as the safety net. As regards to climbing the bloody thing , I was always a lubbers hole climber. I am still fearful of hight's and any person who isn't must be nuts .
